Ideas, Features & Games

It's time to plan a Valentine's promotion. Here's a great idea that every show can do, even with no budget:

Just make a reservation for two at the best restaurants in town. The reservations should be made in your name. In the few days/week before Valentine’s Day, give away the reservations to guys who forgot to make plans for Valentine’s Day.

When you get a winner, simply call the restaurant and change the name on the reservation.

Don’t buy dinner, just give away the reservation. You’re bailing them out of a tough spot. Get their stories! Why are they such a loser? Why did they wait until the last minute?

Response to this promotion is terrific. And it proves that you don’t have to have a massive promotion budget to create entertainment. But don't leave this to the last minute. You need to make those reservations now.

Timely Topic

Today is Martin Luther King Day. His famous speech was known as I Have a Dream. King was honored in U2's song Pride (In the Name Of Love)

Is Oprah running for President? How would a campaign in 2020 between Trump & Winfrey turn out? What nicknames would Trump have for her?

Evergreen Phone Topic

How much money would it take for you to do a nude scene in a movie? This could also be a scenario, with a caller having been offered $5,000 to play a minor role in a movie by a producer who “discovered” her in a restaurant. Is it legit or is he just trying to hit on her? This could take on a fun tone, or you could turn it into a more serious topic about guys being creepy, and women being vulnerable.

Scenario

I went through the car wash and didn’t have cash to tip the guy who towel dried my car. No cash at all. So I tipped him with a candy bar I had in my console. Now I feel guilty. Should I go back and make it up to him?

Tuesday

Timely Topic

Do you still have Christmas decorations up? At what point are you officially a loser? And at what point should you just leave some of them up until next year?

Evergreen Phone Topic

When people say something stupid, do you correct them, or just let it go? Should you correct it? It could stop them from being stupid again next time. If you’re on a multi-cast show, you could set this up as an internal conflict on the air. One of you say something stupid, and another cast members corrects them on the air. Then a fight ensues about whether that should be done or not, leading to phone calls.

Scenario

I’ve been going out with my girlfriend for about a year, and we get along just fine. It’s all good, but something has come up. She has a new friend from work, and she’s HOT. We have been out for drinks a few times together as a group and she and I really hit it off. I’m interested in her, and I THINK she is in me…but there’s the problem with my girlfriend. If I ask this other girl out, and she is not interested, my GF will probably find out, and she’ll dump me. I don’t want that. But I feel that I’m missing out on something by NOT asking her out. What should I do?

Mid-January New Year’s Resolution Update: Do you buy clothes you PLAN to fit into? You could set it up as “I’m starting to fall off the NY Resolution wagon, and violate my diet, so I just bought a new wardrobe that’s two sizes smaller. It’s my incentive to stay with my resolution."

Evergreen Phone Topic

What’s worse: a man who can fix things and won’t, or a man who can’t fix things but tries?

Scenario

My boss calls me the wrong name. I’ve been working at this company for 6 months…and it’ps going well. I like the job, but there’s one thing that bugs me. Ever since I started, my boss calls me Kelly. My name is Kandi. It’s not really his fault, because he didn’t hire me. He inherited me when he transferred to this department about six week ago. I’ve never mentioned it…and now that so much time has gone by, I think it would be weird to correct him on it. Do you correct people that call you the wrong name? I mean, this is someone I work pretty closely with…it’s not like some barista at Starbucks is getting my name wrong.

Timely Topic

You're just finishing the third full week of the new year. Who's ready for a vacation?

Evergreen Phone Topic

This is a great topic that can run across multiple breaks or even thread through the entire show: “If everyone were just like me…(blank)! Listeners provide three answers each. For example: No one would actually park NEAR the entrance to a store, mall, or restaurant because we’d all be paranoid of door dings. Everyone would have a big nose! And we’d all still be listening to our music on vinyl!!

Scenario

My husband and I in the middle of a big fight. It started last weekend when we were playing a Would You Rather game with some friends. The question he got was, “If you could only have sex one more time in your life, who would you want to have sex with?”. At first he didn’t answer right away and I was annoyed. And he could tell, and then he said “Jennifer”, who’s one of my best friends. I was livid, and still am. Later he apologized and said he did it just to mess with me, but I can’t help but wonder. How can I get over this? Or should I?

Friday

Timely Topic

This could be a character-defining topic for a show member, or from someone in your audience that's already planning their excuse for not going to the Super Bowl party (in two weeks). It's a big deal, but a lot of people either are serious fans and want to watch the game without the distractions  or they just aren't into football and have no interest at all. Why are you planning on missing Super Bowl Sunday?

Evergreen Phone Topic

What is the best thing you’ve found dumpster diving? Or, are you addicted to going through trash looking for things you can use? Like at work? Or at school, etc.?

Scenario

My 13 yr old son is a good kid but he likes to push to the limit. Last night he asked to stay out with friends. We said, “Come on home, it’s dinner time.” Then we agreed to let him stay for one more hour, but be back at 7:30. He said, “7:35?” I said, that’s it, 7:30 and if you’re late, you’re grounded. 7:30 hits, no kid. 7:35 I start calling him. No answer. 7:45 he shows up: ” He explains that they were outside, never went anywhere, and “I’m only a few late, I didn’t hear the phone." Should he be grounded?
